SMCS Programs
Information on all SMCS programs!
Mathematics
Mathematics is the study of number, quantity, and space. Mathematics can be studies for its own sake (usually called pure mathematics) or as it is applied to other disciplines.
Career options:
This is a popular option for future teachers or professors and also for students who double major and combine math with some other Arts or Science degree. Also, mathematics is a good foundation for students planning to take a specialized graduate program (MBA, medical school, law school, etc.)
"Pure mathematics is the poetry of logical ideas." -Einstein
Mathematics with Engineering
This SMCS major provides a foundational Engineering program combined with more advance mathematical training.
Career options:
Engineering graduates who have a math specialization have a plethora of opportunities within the engineering field.
"Engineering is like math, but louder. -anonymous"
Computer Science
Computer Science is the practice of understanding computer languages and understanding, designing, and automating algorithmic processes. If you're into problem solving, this is the specialization for you.
Career options:
Graduates find meaningful careers with IT companies, government, banks, insurance companies, etc.
"Everyone should know how to code, it teaches you how to think." -Steve Jobs
Video Game Programming
Video Game Programming involves mathematical and problem-solving skills in addition to programming and design of video games on traditional and non-traditional platforms.
Career options:
Opportunities exist with video game development companies, animation studios, and multi-media agencies.
"Reality is broken. Game designers can fix it." -Jane McGonigal
Financial Mathematics
Financial Mathematics is the application of mathematical models to finance, usually to analyze markets and pricing.
Career options:
A great option for students who are interested in working in the financial industry i.e. with banks and investment companies.
"Most complete program in Atlantic Canada!"
Actuarial Science
Actuarial Science is the study of risk - usually risk associated with insurance, pension, and investment plants.
Career options:
Insurance, risk management, and consulting companies and governments hire actuaries.
"UPEI will have the only accredited Actuarial Science program in Atlantic Canada."
Data Analytics
Analytics is the application of techniques from Mathematical and Computational Sciences to discover meaningful patterns in data. Data Analytics focuses on raw data for the purpose of drawing conclusions about that information.
Career options:
Anyone who collects data is looking for Data Analysts to help extract meaning from data: banks, insurance companies, government, web-based companies, etc.
"Information is the oil of the 21st century and analytics is the combustion engine." -Peter Sondergaard
Business Analytics
Analytics is the application of techniques from Mathematical and Computational Sciences to discover meaningful patterns in data. Business Analytic, which focuses particularly on business data, uses analytics to improve business performance.
Career options:
The possibilities are truly endless - every organization with a business plan needs data analyzed. More specific examples include supply chain management, fraud detection, and risk and credit analysis firms.
"Without analytics, companies are blind and deaf, wandering onto the web like deer on a freeway." -Geoffrey Moore
Statistics
Statistics is the practice of collecting and analyzing numerical data, and inferring properties of the whole from a representative sample.
Career options:
There are a number of options including working at the federal government agency, StatsCan, but also for other government departments at the municipal, provincial, or federal level. Also banks, and education/research institutes seek employees with a statistics specialty.
"To understand God's thoughts, one must study statistics, for these are the measure of his purpose." - Florence Nightingale
